    An Analysis of Translation Techniques in the English Version of Arrahman Surah

    The Holy Qur’an has been translated into many languages including English. However, different translator of the Holy Qur’an produces different English version of Al-Qur’an because every translator uses different translation techniques to translate Al-Qur’an. This study aims to compare the three English versions of Arrahman surah, and describe the most dominant translation techniques used by the three translators to translate the Holy Qur’an. Translation techniques proposed by Molina and Albir (2002, p.509-511) are used to analyze the data. The data for this study are words, phrases, and clauses in the 78 verses of Arrahman surah in Arabic and its three English versions translated by Maulawi Sher ‘Ali, Dr. Muhammad Taqi­ud­Din Al­Hilali and Dr. Muhammad Muhsin Khan, and Talal Itani. The result shows that there are four most dominant techniques used by the three translators in translating the Holy Qur’an; Adaptation, Amplification, Established Equivalent, and Literal Translation technique. The first and the second translator prefer to use Amplification to introduce details in brackets or footnotes, but the third translator prefers to use Established Equivalent to find a term or expression recognized (by dictionaries or language in use) as an equivalent.Keyword: Qur’an, Surah Arrahman, Technique, Translatio

    Language Phenomenon In Bilingual And Multilingual Situation

    People communicate with each other in speech. Communication process employs a code (language). Bilingual speakers have access to two codes. Most linguists agree the speakers have abstract knowledge of language/languages they speak (rules/ principles/ ways of saying and doing things with sounds, words, and sentences) rather than just knowledge of specific sounds, words, and sentences. Communication among people who speak the same language is possible because they share such knowledge. A person is bilingual if he speaks two languages, no matter to what degree. Multilingual is less common but is appropriate when it is a matter of more than two languages. Multilingualism has been studied both as an individual phenomenon (how one acquires two or languages in childhood or later? how these languages are represented in the mind? and how they are accessed for speaking and writing and for comprehension?) and as a societal phenomenon (the status and roles of the languages in a given society, attitudes toward languages, determinants of language choice, the symbolic and practical uses of the languages, and the correlations between language use and social factors such as ethnicity, religion, and class). This paper discuss the phenomena of code choice, code switching, and code mixing in bilingual and multilingual situations and examine diglossia when clear functional differences between codes govern the choice

    Karonese Nganting Manuk (NM) Text Translation Into English

    The use of pure borrowing techniques to translate cultural content text aims to maintain cultural values contained in the source text, but the meaning of the text may not be conveyed in the target text. Nganting Manuk text is one of the cultural Karonese cultural texts which are used in the wedding ritual of Karonese Community. Translation error on the cultural content can damage the meaning and cultural values contained therein. Therefore, this study aimed to find a translation of the meaning and cultural issues in NM text translation, technical translation of the corresponding applied to translate the NM text, as well as to determine the quality of NM text. Therefore, this study was conducted to find the most appropriate translation techniques used to translate a cultural content text—Nganting Manuk. Analysis was performed on a text which has been translated from Karo into English. The analysis showed that pure borrowing technique is the most appropriate technique to be used to translate a text-laden culture. The use of pure borrowing techniques in cultural content in Nganting Manuk text can clarify the meaning and cultural values of the source text into the target text. As the analysis result, it was found that the technique of Cultural Philosophy and Contextual Information (CPCI) is the proper technique to translate cultural content NM text

    Technology plays an important role in supporting the teaching and learning process. However, with the advance development of computer and internet, traditional teaching method has enhanced to match the millennial generation, and so does happen to translation class. To cope with the new trend and changes happen to the students who are really engaged with the social networking services (SNS) and gadgets, translation lecturers should be able to integrate technology to Translation Teaching (TT) to get students more engaged with translation field and to improve the classical lecturer-centered class. The method of this research is descriptive qualitative method for translation studies by Toury in 1995. The data are the students‟ translation product in translation class and interviews. The objective of this study is to explore the strategies in applying technology for teaching and learning translation theory/practice in the English Education Department of The State Islamic University of North Sumatra which covers on three aspects; technology, economics, and mini research. It is beneficial to match the 21st century skills by strengthening students‟ translating competence in using computer as assisted tool for translating text, promoting their own translation business (translation agency project) in SNS, and having an experience in conducting translation research. Finally, it combines the enhancement of technology with traditional teaching (blended learning) to engage and motivate students in learning the translation practice/theory autonomously

    Analysis of translation techniques and ideology in Hikayat Hang Tuah

    This study aims to (1) identify the translation techniques in translating Hikayat Hang Tuah from Malay into English, (2) to see the most dominant techniques in translating Hikayat Hang Tuah, and (3) to describe the translators’ ideology in translating Malaysian cultural terms into English. This research is descriptive translation studies oriented to the translation product (Toury, 1995). The 50 data selected from Hikayat Hang Tuah (1966) in Malay language and its English version translated by Muhammad Haji Salleh (2016). The data are collected by using purposive sampling technique and document analysis (Miles & Huberman, 2014). After analyzing the translation techniques (Molina and Albir, 2002), it shows that; there are 10 translation techniques applied; Amplification (80%), Reduction (76%), Adaptation (72%), Modulation (46%), Literal translation (36%), Transposition (34%), Generalization (18%), Description (16%), Discursive Creation (12%), and Borrowing (2%). The most dominant techniques are Amplification, Reduction, and Adaptation. It can be concluded that the translator has domestication ideology since he adapted and replaced the cultural words with the descriptions of the words rather than borrowing the cultural terms to promote the culture. To solve the grammatical differences, the translator generalized the specific pronouns and gave additional words to explain the specific cultural terms

    Translation Agency Project As A Strategy In Teaching Translation Theory

    The practice of teaching translation was often done by discussing translation theories and translating texts in the classroom. However, the problem is students also need to have a real-life experience as professional translators that will be useful for them in the future. This paper presents the findings of a research study conducted in a translation class of English Education Department students in the State Islamic University of North Sumatra. The research is about Translation Agency Project as innovation strategy to teach translation subject. The students were assigned to develop their own translation agency by promoting their agency, handling the clients, and translating the texts. The objective of this research is to identify the challenges faced by the students in running their Translation Agency Project. It also includes how students cope with those challenges. Finally, it describes the benefits of using Translation Agency Project in teaching translation. The method of this research is descriptive qualitative method for translation studies (Toury, 1995) based on theoretical research compared to a survey applied to students of English Education Department who have learned about translation theories. As a result, after analyzing the data, it can be seen that the biggest challenge the students faced in conducting their translation agency is advertising the translation agency (43%), meeting with clients (36%), and translating the texts (21%). Finally, after analyzing the survey, it shows that translation Agency Project is an effective and recommended strategy to teach translation theories in the class

    TRANSLATION TECHNIQUES AND QUALITY IN THE ENGLISH VERSION OF NGANTING MANUK TEXT

    The aims of this study are to identify translation techniques in the English version of nganting manuk text, to elaborate reasons of applying the most dominant translation technique in the English version of nganting manuk text, and to describe the translation quality of nganting manuk text in accuracy, acceptability, and readability aspects. This descriptive qualitative research is an embedded-case study and oriented to translation product. The data consist of words, phrases, clauses, and sentences in nganting manuk text, and the translation quality information from the key informants. The data are collected by document analysis, questionnaire, and analyzed by interactive data analysis technique. There are 10 translation techniques to translate nganting manuk text; borrowing, amplification, adaptation, literal, reduction, established equivalent, transposition, modulation, discursive creation, generalization, and the most dominant technique is borrowing influenced by the translator’s foreignization perspective. The translation quality is good enough; accuracy (70.4%), acceptability (63.4%), and readability (66.1%). One proposed theory is to use Cultural Information Philosophy (CPI) in the footnote to get the reader understanding the local wisdom of Karonese and the philosophy of nganting manuk text. Keywords: nganting manuk, translation technique, quality
